Liturgical Season: Ordinary Time
The Nativity of John the Baptist
“I am the voice of one calling in the desert, ‘Make straight the way for the Lord”. John 1:23
Today we celebrate the birth of Saint John the Baptist. Considered a prophet, John is known as the cousin of Jesus. John called people to turn to God and to prepare for the coming of the Messiah. He baptised Jesus in the River Jordan. People would go to him so that he would put them in the water to show that they have turned away from their sins, so that they could get into heaven.
Prayer: God our strength and our hope, grant us the courage of John the Baptist, constantly to speak the truth and welcome Jesus into our lives. Amen.
