Liturgical Season: Easter
Wednesday 20th May - Mother of Mercy
“Mary is the one who has the deepest knowledge of the mystery of God's mercy. She knows how great it is. In this sense, we call her the Mother of Mercy” Pope Saint John Paul II
Mary is truly our Mother of tender compassion, our Mother of Mercy. First of all, Mary is Mother of Mercy because, through her Immaculate Conception, God fashioned her to be the created masterpiece of his mercy in the world. The second reason we are right to call Mary "Mother of Mercy" is that she was the one chosen to be the Mother of God - in other words, she was the Mother of the merciful Saviour, and in this way she literally brought Divine Mercy Himself to birth in our world. Thirdly, during her life on earth, she performed a tremendous work of mercy for us all: She showed us the way to be true disciples of Jesus Christ. And finally, Mary is "Mother of Mercy" because from heaven she continues to come to our aid.
Prayer: You open your arms to us most merciful Mother, and stretch out your hands, full of mercies and gifts. Your Mother's heart is restless to endow us with everything we need. Guide us and take us to the eternal light. Amen.
