Task 1

Read Chapters 1-3 and answer the questions attached below.

Grammar activity - Apostrophes for contraction

 

Look at the sentences below. Why have the apostrophes been used in each example? Are there any other times we use apostrophes? Are there any exceptions to the rules?

The dolphin’s fin was broken.

The girls’ changing room was painted yellow.

It’s a lovely day!

Its spots were black and white.

I couldn’t believe my luck!

 

Watch the videos on BBC Bitesize which review apostrophes for contraction and possession. Remember -  'its' shows possession without an apostrophe but this is the only case! Plurals on their own do not need apostrophes (unless they are showing plural possession)!

Task 3

Planning activity:

Review WAGOLL 1 and 2 and annotate. Use these to create a list of success criteria for a diary entry (e.g. cohesion (adverbials, pronouns, adverbs, etc); writing in the correct style; punctuation).

Recap the start of the novel Think about what we know about Stanley, what happened to him, how he must have been feeling, etc. What was his journey like?  What might he have been thinking about the trip, e.g. feeling positive and excited or nervous?  Why?

 

Plan a diary entry from Stanley’s perspective about an aspect of his time at Camp Green Lake – it can be a series of diaries from the beginning to wherever you are up to in the novel.  You should spend some time  planning some interesting vocab and/or planning some of the sentence types looked at earlier.

Task 4

Modelled write - example text:

Dear Diary,

 

I am struggling to write today as my hands are so sore; I have blisters upon blisters and I am out of breath for today has been incredibly difficult. This evening, after what felt like an eternity, I arrived at Camp Green Lake. Instantly, I knew this was hell. I was so thirsty from hours sitting on a tin can trudging through the stifling heat of the desert. I’ve come to realise that I made the wrong decision - I should have chosen jail over this hellish nightmare. I remembered the curse; this is why I had chosen Camp Green Lake. There is no point arguing my case now – I will have to just grin and bear it.

 

All of the kids back home were talking of their vacations at camps or in other countries. They said they did skateboarding, canoeing and water-skiing at their camps, but obviously this isn’t one of those places. With temperatures rising up to 48 degrees celsius in the shade and no water source within 100 miles, this is far from a ‘holiday camp’. Showers in the wild, no buildings (only tents), dry throats and sore hands: this is the worst place on Earth. This camp ends happiness, takes memories and turns them into never-ending nightmares.

 

Writing task:

Write a diary entry from Stanley’s perspective about an aspect of his time at Camp Green Lake – it can be a series of diaries from the beginning to wherever you are up to in the novel.

Make sure it includes Stanley’s personal thoughts and feelings, hopes and fears, etc.  It should be an account of Stanley’s feelings.

 

Read your work aloud whilst covering your ears to help you to hear your own mistakes. Edit.
