Foundation Stage Maths
In foundation stage we teach our maths in the same way that we teach phonics; the children will have mini maths sessions for 20 minutes each day which will be in small groups. Work will be specially tailored for the ability of each group. They will focus on their maths fluency during this time by practicing counting out loud, recognising numbers and understanding what each number means. Alongside this, they will also do weekly maths sessions as a class which will focus on problem solving and reasoning.
The best way to support you child at home with maths is to do lots of practice of counting out loud and counting objects and encourage them to spot numbers in the environment. As the year progresses, children can practice recalling number facts such as number bonds to 5 and doubles of numbers.
