At Bishop Ellis school we teach a systematic phonic programme based on "Letters and Sounds". This is a resource published by the Department for Education and Skills with the first edition being launched in 2007. It aims to build children's speaking and listening skills in their own right as well as to prepare children for learning to read by developing their phonic knowledge and skills.
We teach two 20 minute sessions each day with the children split into 8 ability groups through the key stage, allowing for personalised teaching with small adult to child ratios.
Children in year 1 are taught in four extra 20 minute sessions to reinforce the learning from the previous session. It also gives the children an extra chance to apply the new skills that they learn.
