Maths

Supporting your child at home with maths can be so simple. By the end of year 1, we expect the children to be able to count up in 2s, 5s and 10s and by the end of year 2, we expect them to know their 2, 3, 4, 5 and 10 times tables.

Games that you could play whilst in the car (as an alternative to eye spy...) could be

  • Times table challenges (you and your child take turns in counting up (and back) in jumps of 2.
  • Quick fire times tables (times tables out of order 5x2, 8x2, 2x2 etc).

Children also need to know their number bonds (pairs of numbers that add up to make a larger number). To start with the children need to know

  • Number bonds to 10 (0+10=10, 1+9=10, 2+8=10) etc.
  • Number bonds to 20 (0+20=10, 1+19=20, 2+18=20) etc.
  • Number bonds within 20 (e.g 13+3=16, 3+4=7) etc.

We also have a booklet "Helping your child with maths" which can be downloaded from the page below.
