Mini Maths

 

This year we are begun teaching maths in the same way as we teach phonics. This means that the children will work in small groups according to their abilities for 20 minutes each day. The focus on these are to embed childrens understanding and sense of number. As well as this, we will also teach guided maths at least once a week focusing on problem solving and investigational skills, linked to our current topic, such as

 

  • Which fruit is the best for Handa to carry? An investigation involving weighing different fruits and deciding which is the lightest, then applying or reasoning skills to decide which will be the best for her to carry a long distance. 
  • Who will use the most footprints from the beanstalk to the castle: Jack or the Giant? How can we find out? An investigation involving counting, measuring, comparing and reasoning.
  • Our teddy bears want to go outside but its far too cold! How can we help them keep warm? An investigation involving different sized teddy bears, hats, gloves, scarves and thinking about size, sharing, comparing and reasoning. 

 

These activities are designed to improve children's problem solving and reasoning abilities as well as improving basic number skills and use of mathematical vocabulary. 

 

We are also focusing on number recognition and use to 20, counting forwards and backwards and doubling and halving as well as forming numbers, as these are skills which children often find difficult.
